ShawneeBaptistChurch has a rich heritage having been established in 1923 on property purchased for $15,000. Having begun as a mission Sunday School and organized into a church, it has grown tremendously through the years. The church constructed a beautiful auditorium at 38th and Market Streets, Louisville, KY, in 1948 and later added a new educational building in 1961 for approximately $125,000. The church grew to high attendances of around 400 plus and then, through population shifts, the church went through a period of decline. Thanks to the providence of God and some folks that would not quit, the doors have remained open.
For the past 30 years the church has seen a great spirit of revival and soul winning (1972- Shawnee Baptist called its current pastor, Lonnie Mattingly). Average attendance has grown from the low 60's to averaging 1,200+. We relocated from the 38th and Market property to the present 11-acre campus on Bank Street in 1977. Our property value has gone from a few hundred thousand into the millions. We have witnessed over 600 precious souls saved and baptized each year approaching 1,000 the past few years. To God be the Glory!
Since 1977, we have moved from a crowded remodeled room, where we sat on folding chairs for four years, to another auditorium, expanding it to its fullestpotential, and now meet in our present auditorium, built in 1995. The Lord has allowed us to have a pioneering spirit among our people as we have tried to reach out to the Kentuckiana region. As we press toward the future, we realize the need to Provide the Family Place. Our people have been faithful, sacrificing folks who love souls and the Lord's work. We believe that God has set us as a lighthouse in a dark world to train people to reach others with the gospel of Christ.
We have built a wonderful gymnasium for church and school activities. We have remodeled our buildings for effective use for our school and college. We have built a bus garage, print shop, and wood shop for our bus ministry, schools, and church needs. We have improved our parking and developed a beautiful ball field for church and school use. God has been so good to us. We have much still to accomplish with our church outreach programs, bus ministry, youth ministry, campground, Christian school and Christian college. God has given us a big challenge to attempt great things for His glory.
The most recent building is the new church auditorium. This spectacular project was a faith-effort taken on totally by our church family to Provide the Family Place for the 21st Century. We recognize this building as a beautiful tool for reaching more souls and pleasing our Master. If you do not know Him personally, Please trust Him now as SAVIOUR.
